Tad Williams' Message Board

Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies -- 'God damn it, you've got to be kind.'
-    Kurt Vonnegut, 1922-2007

Welcome to the message board for tadwilliams.com. All comments are welcome, whether kudos or brickbats. However, please bear in mind that Tad would like this to be a friendly, civil message board, at least in the relations between users. We reserve the right to remove postings, or even ban postings, from anyone who crosses the boundary of reasonable taste. Basically, you can argue vigorously with someone, but watch your language, okay? We have a lot of young readers as well as grown-ups, so please show them some respect.

But the main requirement here is: have fun.

Re: The Xenodochium (Paragon)

***January 2 (The Day After New Year's Day Day)***

Back by popular request (well, one person) - another one of those what-X-are-you tests.

What Robot are You?

I'm David, that kid from A.I.  I'm not sure how I feel about that.

(by the way, I have a feeling that I've seen this on Shadowmarch before, tho I couldn't find it anywhere in the archives and I didn't get the link from here in the first place.  Anyone remember?)

Re: The Xenodochium (Paragon)

***January 3***

Nevy mentioned some time back in this thread the whole six-degrees-of-separation phenomenon, with regards to her knowing someone who knows someone who knows the Eric who Conveys Emotions (see December 31 for the message).

The Oracle of Bacon

It's finally working again (it goes down occasionally for no good reason that I can fathom), so here it is.  The most famous variant on the idea that everybody is only separated by six degrees of knows someone who knows someone who knows... is the idea that every actor and actress in the world can be linked to the actor Kevin Bacon by a series of was in this movie with X, who was in a movie with Kevin Bacons.  This site proves it.  Most can be linked with Bacon in two steps.  Examples:

Sean Connery was in Just Cause (1995) with Lynne Thigpen
Lynne Thigpen was in Novocaine (2001) with Kevin Bacon

Peter Jackson was in Frighteners, The (1996) with R. Lee Ermey
R. Lee Ermey was in Murder in the First (1995) with Kevin Bacon

Edward D. Wood Jr. was in Plan 9 from Outer Space (1958) with Bill Ash
Bill Ash was in Six Pack (1982) with Diane Lane
Diane Lane was in My Dog Skip (2000) with Kevin Bacon

I have so far found only one actor that cannot be linked to Bacon, and I challenge you to do the same :)

Btw Lian, I noticed that member #1453 (just registered) is named 'data'.  Not not telling us anything, I hope?  :)

Re: The Xenodochium (Paragon)

I used to play the 6 Degrees of Kevin Bacon game all the time. I was pretty good (hey - it was a slow year).

My biggest triumph was connecting Sir Laurence Olivier to Kevin Bacon...

Ah, the memories... ;)

Re: The Xenodochium (Paragon)

The Oracle connects Laurence to Bacon in one step, but that takes all the fun out, doesn't it?  :)

I have seen perhaps two movies that Kevin Bacon is in, so I'd be hopeless at doing it manually.

Hey, Paragon, I thought I'd drop in for a visit.  Now I'm hooked.  Hehehe.  I looked up what robot I am, and apparently I am T2. Hmmmm.  Now, if only I know anything about T2.  *scampers off to find out about the robot under her skin*

Re: The Xenodochium (Paragon)

That's good to hear, Sam  :)

T2 can change shape and stab people with his arms.  But T3 (aka T-femme) is the female one.

Who me? Click on that link? No...I'd never do something like that...no self-respecting person over 18 and under 60 would do such a thing...

I'm not self-respecting, so I advanced to the countdown.

Oh, and a question regarding yesterday's link: Who's Kevin Bacon?

Usually, to be completely unbiased and objective, you have to have no idea what you're talking about.

Re: The Xenodochium (Paragon)

Hey, I'm apparently a very cool robot under my skin.  I wonder why I haven't discovered my morphing abilities so far.  *shrug*  Oh well.  Anyway, I'm not terribly surprised that my inner robot is male.  After all, I have always claimed that my inner child is a guy.  So apparently Sam is an inner *robotic* child.  *grin*   Ah, the joys of self-discovery.  And Paragon, thanks for the warning.  You know, most times you can handily deal with websites like those by hitting ctrl alt delete and shutting down your browser.  Not that I would have any idea what kind of website that was, because I definitely didn't click on the link.  But if I *did* know...

*worried* you make it sound genuinely dirty :)

djf: Kevin Bacon is just this actor whose name happens to rhyme with 'separation'.  Don't ask me why he has become the hub of the acting community of the world; it certainly isn't because of his movies (which include Hollow Man, Wild Things, The River Wild, Apollo 13, JFK, Friday the 13th, A Few Good Men).

Back to the exceptionally weird.

Hats of Meat

Yes, you read correctly.  People making hats out of meat.  Out of meat.  There are baseball caps made out of steak and mincemeat, cowboy hats made out of beef, and a yarmulke comprised entirely of brisket.  And they wear them.  Out of meat.

Hmm...maybe this is one trend I'll have to let pass...the FAQ's were very useful though, in case I ever change my mind (or should that be lose my mind?)...:-D
