Tad Williams' Message Board

Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies -- 'God damn it, you've got to be kind.'

Welcome to the message board for tadwilliams.com. All comments are welcome, whether kudos or brickbats. However, please bear in mind that Tad would like this to be a friendly, civil message board, at least in the relations between users. We reserve the right to remove postings, or even ban postings, from anyone who crosses the boundary of reasonable taste. Basically, you can argue vigorously with someone, but watch your language, okay? We have a lot of young readers as well as grown-ups, so please show them some respect.

From the "files"

The Gallery of "Misused" Quotation Marks

The humble quotation mark, when used around a single word, is supposed to convey irony
A bunch of "intellectuals" is therefore talking about people who are so-called, but not really, intellectuals.

Unfortunately, many people seem to think that quotation marks are used to emphasize important words, and there are therefore many examples of unintentionally hilarious misuses.  And this website has 'em all.  Examples:

a homemade sign at a flea market:
all swimsuits are clean and "sanitized"

a sign on a freeway in Houston:
road "work" ahead

an auto-reply e-mail:
Just responding to let you know that a "human" reads each and every comment to BizRate.com!

Seen on a sign outside of a grocery store:
"fresh" fruit

Re: Googlewhacking

Using the good old open-a-dictionary-and-browse-till-you-find-a-word-you've-never-seen-before method I tried these:

novena (a Roman Catholic devotion consisting of special prayers or services on nine successive days) liliaceous (of the lily family) - 0 hits.

gurnard (a sea-fish of the family Triglidae) ratiocinate (to reason) - 2 hits.

scorbutic 9of, like, or affected with scurvy) doxology (a liturgical formula or praise to God) - 0 hits.

Not bad so far, but I haven't hit it yet...

***February 6 (Waitangi Day)***

From the dummy's-guide-to-personality-classification files

What Hue Are You?

For the home-decorator in all of us.  I am apparently a "Black-'n-White Bombshell", which means that I've "got a stark, modern sensibility - black and white all the way. Your choice in colors says you're bold, dramatic, and decisive."  Good, good, except I'm currently surrounded by hardwood.  Not that I had much of a choice about that.

And in order to balance out my cutsey-karma, tommorrow's link will be hard-nosed and warmongering, I promise. :)

*blushes*
This is what I got...

One Hot Mama:

The reds, yellows, oranges, and pinks toward which you gravitate are hot, hot, hot - and chances are, you've got a personality to match. You've got a wide range of colors to choose from in this palate, from neon pink to pale, sunny yellow. For balance, make sure that values and saturations of your colors (brights, pastels, or jewel tones, clear or slightly muted) are compatible. And then, because hot colors can be overstimulating, make sure there's at least some space in your home that's more relaxing: A blue-and-white bedroom can look strong without being shocking, and a sybaritic bath suite with neutral hues can take the burn out of a too-hot house.

Oh, and in case I haven't said so before: Thanks a lot for this place, Paragon. My Odds'n'Ends-bookmark section has swelled quite a bit since you opened the xenodochium.

Re: The Xenodochium (Paragon)

Actually, I do like bright colours.  And when I'm not renting, I probably will live in a bright house.  To an extent, anyway...

I am also an:

Eclectic Entertainer

You're never predictable, never pinned down. One night it's cocktails for 40, the next weekend, a girls-only video film festival. As for the food, it's as varied as your circle of friends — everything from Cincinnati chili and baby-back ribs to Chilean sea bass with baby vegetables. To keep a wide variety of serving pieces looking hip and not haphazard, stick to one color family (say, earth tones), or a single material, like glass bowls in different colors and different styles.

Oo, I think you'll like it :)

Lib: So not a bright yellow house with an orange chimney then?  I think I'd be more like djf's serene one, because I tend to surround myself with blue a lot.  I didn't try the entertainment question at first, because some of the questions are rather awkward ("For your big event, you wear
A. Jeans and an oversized cotton sweater
B. A lace camisole and a long velvet skirt
C. The perfect little black dress
D. Your Santa 'n snowflakes sweater") but apparently I'm an eclectic entertainer also.

Re: The Xenodochium (Paragon)

Seaside Serene:

The blues, greens, and violets that most appeal to you are known for their calm, soothing properties. Chances are, you've got tremendous inner calm (or are you just desperately seeking serenity?), and your rooms welcome you home from a rough day with open arms. While a palate of all-cool colors can look fabulous, adding a spicy dose of heat balances things out in a way that makes a room look and feel complete. Juxtapose a rich red Chinese trunk with your sage sofa, or collect some sunny yellow McCoy pottery to wake up your blue-and-white bedroom.

I'm hungry

Eclectic entertainer? I was reading electric all the time and wondering what that was supposed to mean.

I think I need a new pair of glasses one of these days.

Re: The Xenodochium (Paragon)

Apparently I'm confused:

Color My World:

You've never met a color you didn't like… from hot-mama reds to cool-as-a-cucumber celadon, every shade holds some appeal for you. Chances are, this broad-spectrum taste in colors reflects a personality and life that are equally eclectic. To keep things colorful without looking confused, choose a variety of colors with the same intensity: A rainbow's worth of pastels, for example, or primary reds, blues, greens, and yellows, or rich jewel tones of bottle green, oxblood, and luggage-tan.

...With a Cool Breeze

You also gravitate to the cooler tones of green, blue, and violet, known to reflect - and induce - calm and serenity. Luckily, these colors can compliment a hotter palate beautifully. Cobalt blue or lime green adds a special zing to bright yellow, red, and orange, and French blue is the perfect accent color for a room done up in pale yellows and golds. You can also add cool colors by bringing nature indoors: live plants are a great way to add green hues, and, if you're renovating or building from scratch, a skylight is an ideal way to let in a cloud-dotted swath of blue.

And I'm an Eclectic Entertainer too. Must be something in the water...

Re: The Xenodochium (Paragon)

sleeping style......

Free-Spirited Sleeper

Like you, your decorating style is complex and hard to pigeonhole. In your boudoir, romantic pieces snuggle up with funky flea-market treasures and touches of elegance mix effortlessly with down-home coziness. In your enthusiasm to add every new treasure you find to your bedroom, remember that too much clutter and confusion can overstimulate your senses, making it tougher to unwind and greet the sandman with a smile. Try to achieve the same eclectic look with fewer pieces. Rotate favorite treasures from time to time so all your favorites have their day, and move some of your treasured items into the living room and kitchen, to add a shot of energy to those daytime spaces.

Re: The Xenodochium (Paragon)

Huuuees! oh! Ah! Now that's the quiz I waited for...I'd die form beautiful colours...

aha. Interesting results...

…With a Hot Flash

You also seem to like the room-warming reds, yellows, pinks, and oranges, reflecting a passionate side and a hunger for excitement. Happily, it's easy enough to add warm touches to your color scheme: Bring in buckets of daffodils, red roses or carnations (carnations are back!) Or add a zing of bright pink to your blue-and-white bedroom with a chenille bed throw or an Indian sari used as a table skirt.

Funnily enough, my bedroom is white, but far from blue, plus I *do* use an orange Indian sari-style scarf for covering my couch *and* I've hung a wonderfully vivid dark red chenille fabric on one of my walls (to pair off an dark utramarine poster.)...cool...seems like I'm the perfect interior decorator already...^_^

*smiles cheerfully*

Oh, and here's another Eclectic Entertainer, who has a Decorating IQ of 73%...not bad.

*laughs out loooud*

<<Modern as the Millennium

Your look is as up-to-the-minute as this morning's paper, and as high style as next season's fashion shows. Like most modernists, you like your lines clean and simple — and your accessories spare and carefully edited: a brushed-steel triangular vase, perhaps, or a striking black lacquer box you bought in that funky store downtown. Your dream home is the perfect backdrop for icons of modern design, like your leather Eames lounge chair, with a hint of what's to come.

LOL. Really? Interesting. Strange how my room looks completely different (well..come money...)

whoops. should stop perstering you with my test results :)

Do you think eclectic is the word they elect to use when they don't have a clue from your colour-selection what your decorating style is?
