Re: Dude!
schwa = upside-down 'e'
Odd that there's nothing in the standard character map to represent one of those...though I guess I've only ever really seen it on paper in IPA...
Incidentally, anyone seen Baseketball? There a great "dude" sequence in that movie.

That´s interesting. I´ve never encountered this phenomenon before. Most people, I found, can cope with either the Umlaut or the "ch" but not with both at the same time.
The funny thing is, while I will tease people mercilessly about their inability to correctly pronounce this word, I have exactly the same problem with the word squirrel, which of course is Eichhörnchen in English.

That is why my people call him, "Little Furry Fellow Who Hides His Nuts." Much easier, although it takes a bit longer.

Re: Dude!
While you're at it, try saying 'Scheveningen' or 'beschuit met muisjes'. No umlauts involved, but English speaking people seem te have a lot of trouble with it.

Not only english speaking people. Scheveningen goes down the throat like a hedgehog on acid.

Thanks for the tip, Tad. I will try to keep it in mind.
One problem. What do I call the female squirrels?

Re: Dude!
*laughs* I don't have problems with 'Scheveningen', (though it does hurt my throat a little) but Austrian colloquial tongue is beyond me! (What was that, 'Eichhörnchenschwanz' in Österreichisch, Rimmers? Oachkotzlschwoaf??? *rolls on floor laughing* We used to make a contest out of trying to pronounce it, back then in 7th form on the skiing trip...^_^)
See above - the squirrel, the language trap! Heh.

Re: Dude!
Probably relatively easy to pronounce, but doesn't the German word 'Angstschweiss' have eight consonants in a row?

Re: Dude!
I always thought Austrian sounded kind of cool. Here's a remark I once overheard in the Vienna subway that has become a running gag among my friends:
"Hoast 'n Schlüüssel, bist d'r Cheeef."
(If you got the key, you're the boss)
Unfortunately it's nearly impossible to put the Austrian drawl properly into writing.

"God" spelled backwards is "dog".
"Cow" spelled backwards is "woc".
"Pterodactyl" spelled backwards is very hard to pronounce.

Re: Dude!
Oachkotzlschwoaf, yes, way to go!
It´s a good thing, I wasn´t drinking anything when I read this. Maybe I´ll get out all my Arnie tapes and overdose on his lovely accent.
Still don´t know what to call female sqirrels but I guess I better stay away from them anyway. They´re dangerous and not to be trusted. A few years ago a juvenile delinquent squirrel mugged me while I was strolling through Kew Gardens and made off with my cheese crackers. Stupid squirrel, I would have shared.

Actually the only thing difficult about it is the double stop at the end. That, most people will I suspect get the wrong way round.
