Tad Williams' Message Board

Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies -- 'God damn it, you've got to be kind.'
-    Kurt Vonnegut, 1922-2007

Welcome to the message board for tadwilliams.com. All comments are welcome, whether kudos or brickbats. However, please bear in mind that Tad would like this to be a friendly, civil message board, at least in the relations between users. We reserve the right to remove postings, or even ban postings, from anyone who crosses the boundary of reasonable taste. Basically, you can argue vigorously with someone, but watch your language, okay? We have a lot of young readers as well as grown-ups, so please show them some respect.

But the main requirement here is: have fun.

Re: Dude!

Exactly what I was going to ask. I can't imagine what use a sideways L could have!

Other than playing Tetris, of course.

Re: Dude!

¬ denotes negation in predicate logic

p = True
¬p = False

I don't know if it is used for anything else though.

Re: Dude!

Dang it SarahWarah, I wanted to answer that one.  It's actually used in formal logic generally.  Some people use the tilde (~) instead.

Me neither. In fact, I'm going to show my solidarity in Mookey's illogical world by joining her in the realm of random umlauts!

Oh, that's okay.  I'll just wait until somebody asks about disjunctive properties.  But tell me, who are you who is so wise in the ways of predicate logic?  (Most people don't even know what predicate logic is.)

'Not Sign' or 'Negation Operator'.  (Nothing fancy -- that I know of anyway -- like umlaut or diaeresis.)

Re: Dude!

As to why we have different keyboards, I really don't know. They only differ where non-alphabetical characters are concerned.

Seriously though, I only know the basics really. I'm studying Internet Computing and it was part of a foundations module in the 1st year.

I think it's the grave accent.  The acute accent points the other way, like so ´.

Re: Dude!

Except that it doesn't go over another character, it is one in its own right. Or am I just making this up now?

Re: Dude!

True. Well, someone at work told me it is a single quote. That it is the "true single quote" as opposed to the apostrophe button we normally use. But I'm not sure that sounds right to me.

Re: Dude!

I just have to say that "true single quote" made me chuckle, as if there are other single quotes just masquerading as a quote.

"I'm not really a single quote, I just play one on TV!"

"Excuse me, sir, we're going to have to take you in for questioning. It seems you've been impersonating a single quote."

Re: Dude!

Well, I guess it is kind of dumb looking back on it, but he's a really smart guy and usually knows what he's talking about.

I agree it didn't make much sense though

Re: Dude!

I could tell it was one of those thoughts that was hard to paraphrase... Happens to me all the time; someone says something that makes sense, and I try to tell someone else and they look at me like I'm nuts. Like the thing about water exploding if you microwave it.

See?

Anyway, I appreciated the laugh. Just funny images. :)

Re: Dude!

They must be.
Have you ever seen Billy Wilder´s "One, Two, Three"? Lilo Pulver is giving James Cagney "Umlautstunden".

And when you meet a native english speaker, get them to say Eichhörnchen. Hours of fun!
