Tad Williams' Message Board

Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies -- 'God damn it, you've got to be kind.'
-    Kurt Vonnegut, 1922-2007

Welcome to the message board for tadwilliams.com. All comments are welcome, whether kudos or brickbats. However, please bear in mind that Tad would like this to be a friendly, civil message board, at least in the relations between users. We reserve the right to remove postings, or even ban postings, from anyone who crosses the boundary of reasonable taste. Basically, you can argue vigorously with someone, but watch your language, okay? We have a lot of young readers as well as grown-ups, so please show them some respect.

But the main requirement here is: have fun.

Otherworld by Jason Segel

Look at this folks: What utterly petty plagiarism!

I am disgusted and just gave it one star everywhere.

Whoa! That is either really insolent or utterly ignorant.
And apparently not even well-done. I only skim-read the reviews, but I think one mentioned, that the male character seemed so much more real, because the authors kept mentioning his big nose. Huh!

I just one-starred on Amazon, and left a question on Goodreads regarding the plagiarism.

Big nose from all the lying the authors had to do to get this published! ;)

The main character's name is Simon? Hmm, what other Tad Williams book do I know that name from...?

Maybe we got this wrong and it is a homage!

Ha! We already brought down the average rating on goodreads from 4.4 to 3.6.

Maybe you overlooked it? I even signed out to check and it was there.
I am so angry about this I even started commenting on the good reviews recommending them Otherland.

No, I saw it yesterday. Today I only see Rons rewiew. But who knows why.

It certainly seems like a copy to me from the description and reviews, but I did not read the book myself, so I am hesistant to review it.

Tad and Deborah are aware of this, aren't they?

I decided to recommend Otherland to everyone who wrote a 1 or 2-star review for this.

I feel the same way.
It seems very suspicious, but I have also seen too many cases of people getting upset and piling on someone for a thing that turned out not to be what they thought it was...

Yep, they are and checked with agent and editor but there seems nothing can be done. I wasn't so shy about reviewing it (obviously) but I made clear that I have not read it. Why should I spend money on this?

This aggravates and angers me greatly.  You have to fight for your trademarks, or for your authors!

Yes, of course something can be done, even if it is symbolic. A nice letter to Jason Segel/his publisher from a thoughtful lawyer, not threatening anything but pointing out some similarities would be very nice.

Why aren't they protecting Tad's works?

Uhm. It's published by Tad's publisher.  Of course "there's nothing to be done".  That'd be like the left hand attacking the right hand.

I think a lawyer should be involved. Not someone from Penguin, who I am thinking don't really have Tad's best interest at heart.

Granted, monies.  Lawyers apparently like those.

It does seem weird that both books are published by a division/affiliate of Random House.

Re: Otherworld by Jason Segel

Actually, I don´t find that strange. The various imprints of Random House Penguin are run independently. RHP is just the large overall umbrella company. I doubt that most editors now the books the other imprints are publishing and Otherland is 20 years old :-)

Oh, that part is fine, I suppose. What might not be is saying, "Oh we can do nothing about it," once it has been brought up.
