Tad Williams' Message Board

Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies -- 'God damn it, you've got to be kind.'

Welcome to the message board for tadwilliams.com. All comments are welcome, whether kudos or brickbats. However, please bear in mind that Tad would like this to be a friendly, civil message board, at least in the relations between users. We reserve the right to remove postings, or even ban postings, from anyone who crosses the boundary of reasonable taste. Basically, you can argue vigorously with someone, but watch your language, okay? We have a lot of young readers as well as grown-ups, so please show them some respect.

I btw doubt Gaiman or Rowling will make it. It's both their weakest works ever imho. I think Robin Hobb is the strongest contender for winning ...

I agree that Rowling's book is weak, but it's got a film that was quite well-received. I haven't read Gaiman's book (I've been meaning to read his books for the longest time, but have only read Coraline).

Fantastic Beasts has 45,746 ratings, with an average of 4.4 stars.
Norse Mythology has 47,695 ratings, with an average of 4.11 stars.
Assassin's Fate has 10,952 ratings, with an average of 4.67 stars.

While Hobb's book is the highest-rated of the three, the difference between the ratings is very small. So, I guess we will see, but Rowling's and Gaiman's books seem to have had four times as many readers, with not much difference in the ratings. So I suspect Olaf's prediction will come true.

BTW, I think it is incredible (and wonderful!) that The Witchwood Crown, now with 702 ratings (yay! progress!), was even considered. None of the other books, from authors I've mostly never heard of, have fewer than 3,000 ratings. But as ajl3 says, this certainly will help sales/recognition of TWC. We're actually seeing that already, with "to-reads" jumping by 1,133 in the space of 48 hours. Those numbers are still growing, BTW, with 41 added early this morning. :)

It would be nice to keep TWC in the running as long as possible, as the increased visibility has clearly already helped.

Re: The Witchwood Crown: Nominated for a Goodreads Choice Award

Oftentimes people vote for their favorite writers, regardless of the quality of the nominated book, so I suspect that Gaiman and Rowling will battle it out at the top because of the respective size of their fan bases, but Hobb is a strong contender, too….

You raise good points, Olaf. I suspect Rowling's fan base, and the fact that the book is a movie, will cause her to win. I suspect Gaiman and Hobb will finish out the top 3. But if we can keep Tad in the running for the second round of voting, it will certainly help with the book's visibility.

Re: The Witchwood Crown: Nominated for a Goodreads Choice Award

Here's a good visual breakdown of the nominees, in terms of Goodreads reviews, by author Mark Lawrence (one of the nominees).

And here is his blog post.

Re: The Witchwood Crown: Nominated for a Goodreads Choice Award

Here are last year's nominees, in order of who earned the most votes. (Of course, J.K. Rowling won, by something like 90,000 votes over the #2 entry).

Btw I also voted some days ago though for some reason goodreads says I only voted in the debut goodreads author category.

Voting closed last night for the opening round and the semifinals will open midnight Tuesday EST (i.e., in about 8 hours.) They don't show who made it out of the opening round until then, either.

Phew ok so I did vote in the nick of time, in the evening last night. I only voted in a few other categories, and not for books I've read, but for authors I support. :S

Re: The Witchwood Crown: Nominated for a Goodreads Choice Award

YAY!

...Wait... Why are there more choices than there were in the last round? The last round only had 15 choices; now there are 20?! How does that work? Aren't semi-finals more exclusive than the previous round?

Edit:

*Finds the rules*

Ahhhh... I see: "The top five write-in votes in each of the categories become official nominees. Additional write-ins no longer accepted."

So now there are five write-ins as well.
