Tad Williams' Message Board

Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies -- 'God damn it, you've got to be kind.'
-    Kurt Vonnegut, 1922-2007

Welcome to the message board for tadwilliams.com. All comments are welcome, whether kudos or brickbats. However, please bear in mind that Tad would like this to be a friendly, civil message board, at least in the relations between users. We reserve the right to remove postings, or even ban postings, from anyone who crosses the boundary of reasonable taste. Basically, you can argue vigorously with someone, but watch your language, okay? We have a lot of young readers as well as grown-ups, so please show them some respect.

But the main requirement here is: have fun.

Hide and seek *TWC SPOILERS*

Hey guys,

What did you think about the hide and seek scene in TWC? That scene was written so strangely (beautifully, but strangely). I've been meaning to ask you all about it, and what your thoughts were, but didn't want to do it in the regular discussion thread.

I don't think I've read a Tad-book with a scene that felt so odd. Did anyone else feel that way?

Well, yes. But more so: the way it was written felt like a different style.

Maybe it was just me.

I think it's meant to be somewhat dreamlike, as in rereading the scene I notice how weary Simon is supposed to be: he says he used to have trouble during the days from his dreaming (jeez, no wonder he feels so much older than 50-some, especially combined with running an entire country for 30+ years...the President only does it for 4-8 and that usually ages them double those years) but he hasn't dreamed since the night of the bone charm and yet feels even rougher every day.

More importantly, he starts hearing the voices at the end, which suggest he may have been hearing those all along for month in his sleep but wasn't aware of them.

Yes, it does feel very dream-like. And of course the voices add to that feeling.
