WorldCon 2017 in Helsinki

Yesterday I heard that Helsinki has won the bid for WorldCon 2017, which makes it 99% certain that I will be going. Any other smarchers thinking about it?

Never been to one yet. Never been to Finland, neither.

How is a WorldCon compared to wfc? Apart from bigger?

Re: WorldCon 2017 in Helsinki

Much more fan-centric.

There is always an art-show (which is apparenty pretty hard to get into, from what I heard from an artist I met), a dealers room, opening and closing ceremonies, a costume show. And of course loads of panels and readings. Last year in London they had several philharmonic orchestra's teaming up for a two hour concert of Scifi music.

Re: WorldCon 2017 in Helsinki

When it was in London and I couldn't go, I told myself I'd go the next time it was in Europe, so I guess I will. (And it has the benefit of being a country I haven't been to yet. And might not go to otherwise.)
I was actually thinking of starting this thread myself, since I sort of made friends with someone from Finland recently, who is definitely planning to go, so we were talking about meeting up there.

As this topic came up in the Mint, I thought I'd give the thread a boost.

This is something I will consider, too!

*bump*

I love this idea! Mathmatically, I can't figure out how to save money for a vacation of this scope, but I am enthusiastic nonetheless.

Re: WorldCon 2017 in Helsinki

Well, after last week´s Smarchmoot I am now considering this more seriously.

The Witchwood Crown will be out and it will be Tad´s 60th birthday, so we simply must throw him a party!!!

Re: WorldCon 2017 in Helsinki

Is he attending? Or is it likely that he'll attend? *knows nothing of the Dog's plans*

I think, personally I'm much more interested in Helsinki and Finland and hanging out with Smarchers than in the convention. (Although, I was recently reminded that I actually have been to Helsinki a few years ago and realized that I don't remember _anything_. A reason to go again?)

*knows nothing of the Dog's plans neither and doubts he has any at this point*

We'll just throw him a pary anyway and in case he won't be there Olaf just has to bring his cardboard Dog.

Re: WorldCon 2017 in Helsinki

I don't know anything about Tad, but we have time to persuade him, I guess.

And I'm sure I'm not the only one who wants to go there at least as much to see the city/the country as to go to the con, so I say you should come even if you don't go to the con.

Re: WorldCon 2017 in Helsinki

Sorry, if my post implied Tad would/might be there. I, too, know nothing about Tad´s plans to attend or not attend. But us throwing him a party in absentia was taken for granted by me.

I am also interested in Helsinki itself, but also the con, because I have never been to worldcon before.

Re: WorldCon 2017 in Helsinki

I guess I should start thinking about when and where I will be in Helsinki, as I'll need to book a hotel and flight soon.

So has anyone else made plans yet?

I doubt that I would still get a ticket but thinking I've always wanted to visit Helsinki... so might be up for just hanging out!!

Re: WorldCon 2017 in Helsinki

There are still tickets as far as I can see... (145 Euro at the moment, 95 if you have never been to WorldCon before)

Re: WorldCon 2017 in Helsinki

As I said in the Mint, I should really make plans for this.

Sahi, if you could buy a membership for me, that would be great. (Asking a Smarcher would have been the smart course of action when I decided I didn't want to ask my father... but I keep doing that thing where I just ignore the things I have to do...)

And since this is so close to Castlefest, it would probably work best if to combine the two and fly to Finland from the Netherlands...

Yeah, that sounds like a great plan. I'll send you a PM about getting the money over to me.

Re: WorldCon 2017 in Helsinki

So what dates shall we book for Finland?

CF is from August Fri 4 - Sun 6. Shall we fly on Monday? Or do we want a day of doing nothing at my place? And do we fly back on Sunday the 13th, or Monday morning? (WorldCon is 9-13, no clue at what time the program ends.)
