Tad Williams' Message Board

Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies -- 'God damn it, you've got to be kind.'
-    Kurt Vonnegut, 1922-2007

Welcome to the message board for tadwilliams.com. All comments are welcome, whether kudos or brickbats. However, please bear in mind that Tad would like this to be a friendly, civil message board, at least in the relations between users. We reserve the right to remove postings, or even ban postings, from anyone who crosses the boundary of reasonable taste. Basically, you can argue vigorously with someone, but watch your language, okay? We have a lot of young readers as well as grown-ups, so please show them some respect.

But the main requirement here is: have fun.

Omg. And here I was thinking that it's been too busy to keep up with lately...comparing current numbers with 2001 & 2002? How did we do that? (And how did I not get fired from the job I had back then...I mean seriously...)

Apparently I just had a lot more energy and multitasking ability way back then... *shakes cane weakly*

I stayed up until 4 a.m. or later most nights, and spent whole days planning my life around Smarch. I remember when I started going back to work and school, and "cut back" to an hour a day. It was soooo hard.

Re: Mint statistics

As far as keeping up, I didn't really try back then. To be honest, I would sort of skim through just to see when/if Tad was around and what wisdom/silliness he had imparted.... otherwise I only used the Mint as a chat room.

(Edit to clarify) I think you all should be proud for keeping Smarch alive. The other Tadlands became ghost towns after Tad stopped holding his social media presence there.

Re: Mint statistics

The other Tadlands, I meant! Like the Halcyon BB (not that I would know... perhaps that is still thriving?) And the Lyst, which Smarch pretty much killed.

Ah, yeah. The Halcyon board has been offline since... 2002 or so. It's not even a ghost town: you can't even visit it. I know Guthwulf's board was up circa 2006, but must have gone down sometime after that. Also not visitable. And the Lyst... well, that one can actually still be visited.

Re: Mint statistics

If I calculated right there were 162 days between the end of these 2 mints:

QM - The Pantry by Magpie (last post: 2012-02-22 19:34:27)
QM - The Neverending well by Libra-in-a-roundabout-way (last post: 2011-09-13 21:17:54)

And there were 604 replies to the slow one, meaning there were less than 4 posts per day.

Whereas there were 301 mints between july 1st and december 31st in 2001. Assuming an average of 600 posts (some were less some were more, by a wide margin either way), that meant about 1000 posts/day (301x600/180). More than 250 times as many posts on average that half year as the slowest mint.

Also, it would take just about 4 months for that crew to reach that 1.000.000 marker, if they only posted in the mint.

Are we still on track? We've slowed way down with this Mint...
Do we need another pointless Spam campaign or a Mint party (if there is a difference)?

Re: Mint statistics

So, erm, I kinda like being able to actually read the Mint again (I know I hardly ever post myself, but I do regularly peek in, and value that for being able to get a sense of what's happening with everyone). Call me an old curmudgeon, but posting near-senselessly just for the postcount (or threadcount in this case) feels counter-productive to me if the actual underlying goal is to not just celebrate being more active again, but also to foster an environment where more people can feel like "hey, this Mint is actually a pretty groovy place to hang out in".

(Occasional silliness is what we do, of course, but just not a big fan of actively seeking it out for this threadcount purpose.)

Re: Mint statistics

I think it's just a typically-silly way to encourage people to post a bit more, which means they'll talk a bit more, which is always nice. Not necessarily senseless, having a silly goal to attain.

In the end it just works out to more conversations among friends, in my opinion. But then, I'm not yet an old curmudgeon. *smiles sweetly* ^_^

Re: Mint statistics

I don't think anyone would truly propose it, if it worked. Because so far it's never resulted in more than a couple extra posts for a day or two. We are pretty resilient and the big posty days are over, even if it's been a bit more lively recently. I am certainly happy to watch the young kids zoom by these days. Not even shaking my cane at them.

I don't think curmudgeon fits you at all Aan, you are overly sensible at worst :D .
