Tad Williams' Message Board

Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies -- 'God damn it, you've got to be kind.'
-    Kurt Vonnegut, 1922-2007

Welcome to the message board for tadwilliams.com. All comments are welcome, whether kudos or brickbats. However, please bear in mind that Tad would like this to be a friendly, civil message board, at least in the relations between users. We reserve the right to remove postings, or even ban postings, from anyone who crosses the boundary of reasonable taste. Basically, you can argue vigorously with someone, but watch your language, okay? We have a lot of young readers as well as grown-ups, so please show them some respect.

But the main requirement here is: have fun.

Re: New US Bobby Dollar artwork from Daw Books

Went there to do so as well and guess what I found?
A post by Betsy Wollheim (Tad's editor): "Not the final novel, the third of five."

Now this is GOOD NEWS!

And a lot more important than the covers. Because let's be honest, I'll just take off the dust jacket and read the book...

Re: New US Bobby Dollar artwork from Daw Books

I'm glad Betsy saw that and posted. The "final novel" language carried over from the Hodder post about their cover for SLEEPING, and (*wince*) I didn't catch it when posting even though I knew there would be at least one more in the series (FOREVER O'CLOCK). Didn't know about a 5th, though.

The site's post has been corrected, as have the FB posts that I can edit. I've also left a comment on the Hodderscape FB page and the DAW FB page in reply to Betsy's comment.

How embarassing. I hate missing stuff like that.

I expressed my dissatisfaction with the covers on Daw's Facebook post announcing the new covers. I challenge all you others on FB to voice your displeasure as well.

Thanks for the tip! I added mine.

Ooo good idea, I'll have to do that when I get home tonight.

Five? Wow, Tad's already got enough ideas for two more volumes? In addition to the three new Osten Ard books, more short stories, a possible Odfarm book, and Dog knows what else?

DAW books also replied:

We appreciate everyone’s feedback. We’ll take your comments into consideration, and hope you’ll enjoy future covers as much as we love these!

Not sure what that means in terms of which future covers. New versions for these books, let's hope.

And is it just me, or does the text on Sleeping Late look like it's not even centered? I understand they might have cut off a small portion of the cover where the spine would be, but accounting for that, it still looks off-balance.

Nope, they're off balance. (So are the first two, but less noticeable for some reason.) You can tell most easily by measuring space to left and right of "WILLIAMS" (the widest element) and it's not centered. All the other elements center on that, so the whole is off. The PDF of the full cover press sheet (here http://www.tadwilliams.com/wp-content/u … nt-Day.pdf) shows that it's not about cropping for press.

Yikes.

I did manage, however, to pull together some nice looking headers from these covers to use on the book pages on the site. The first is on the cover reveal post (http://www.tadwilliams.com/2014/06/cove … ement-day/); the other two will go up soon -- I'm still pulling the page revisions together.

The header for SLOJD looks really nice, SS. Still, my eye is drawn to the uncentered text. Nothing you can do about that, of course. You've made lemonade out of lemons. But all your headers have looked artistic and creative, IMO.

You can see on the full size one why it's off centre. The back cover is off centre in the other way. It's for the part of the dust cover which has to wrap all the way around the edge of the hardcover and to the inside, which should take about 3mm of material I assume. The edge toward the spine is just bent 90* so it doesn't need a margin.

EDIT: at the very top you can see the dotted lines indicating the folds and the solid lines for the margin of error.
