Tad Williams' Message Board

Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies -- 'God damn it, you've got to be kind.'

The Schoolhouse RIP Mrs Crabapple

Half the people hereabouts seem to be in school of some sort (University, grad school, taking a baking class to learn to make kick ass cakes which will be sent to me) so I thought maybe a place where we can collectively be like studying sucks when is it summer vacation yet?

Also where's my cake?

Yes please, I completely relate to this topic.
Honestly studying isn't too bad... until I procrastinate and studying turns into cramming.
(Yet here I am, on the message boards, procrastinating.)

Yeah Ron what do you teach?

Also Kimsa what are you studying? I should be doing some preliminary research for an essay and also I should email my project group members about some articles we're supposed to find and yet here I find myself the siren song of the internet is too much for mere mortals to resist.

Studying sucks and I don't get any holidays from it!

Seriously, I have four study periods a year that are 13 weeks each. For those of you who just don't do maths 13*4=52. That's right, I'm going 52 weeks a year. One of the downsides of distance education.

The upside is, of course, I don't have to deal with people.

Although, to be fair, I actually quite enjoy most of my course. The anthropology units can burn in the fiery depths of hell though.

That's so cool Ron, do you enjoy it? Also what part of Arizona are you in? Damon's youngest brother is married to an awesome lady from Arizona so they're likely to settle there.

What are you studying Gen X?

I'm working and studying so I get the best (worst?) of both worlds. I prefer to think of it as best (best meaning I get PAID, also I learn stuff).

Genesis: Oooh, no breaks would be hard. Is it self-paced, though? I had an online course once, and I liked it simply because I could get ahead on it whenever I felt motivated, and ignore it whenever I had higher priorities.

Bandit: I got my bachelor's in Neurobiology, but right now I'm studying for the MCAT to see if I get a high enough score to consider medical school. I'm also taking an Anatomy & Physiology course at the moment, to make sure I don't get rusty in the meantime. What do you study?

Ooooooh bro, I was premed in the States before I moved to New Zealand (my undergrad was in psychology though). Good luck on the MCATs kick ass and take names. If you get into med school what direction are you thinking of going in?

Anywho I'm actually a nurse. I'm currently in my first semester of what will eventually be a Master of Public Health, and I'm both loving it and questioning why the friggin hell anyone ever studies anything ever because seriously: assignments. BAH.

Yes. I love it. :)

My tutors used to describe it as seeing the lightbulbs come on and they loved it too. Sounds like you're exactly the right person to be teaching then. :D

Re: The Schoolhouse RIP Mrs Crabapple

I was a Microecon TA for five semesters, from my third term in my MBA program through a year and a half after.  Also tutored other quant topics on the side (Finance, Operations).  And I was taking some of the CPA curriculum, after I got out of the MBA and was having trouble finding work.  But, kinda abandoned that once I did find a full-time position.  At some point I really should do some studying and take the Series 65.  Also considered maybe getting a Tax Preparer ID, since I (ahem) kind of enjoy doing taxes.  (I did my own in February.)

bandit: I think I'm going to join the Navy and be one of their doctors. What specialty, I haven't decided yet. Nursing is cool too! I was considering that for a while, but wasn't sure about those 12-16 hours shifts.... Do you like it over there in New Zealand?

Sure, I can talk about it. I just linked to the answer because I thought it might not be appropriate to say "I'm a teacher! OMG!" in a thread dedicated to "studying sucks!" ;)

Also: because I'm one of those Top Seekrit Teachers. The kind that are double agents. ;)

The navy, sweet! That would be so interesting. Would you be taken on as an NCO then? Do they pay for your med school? Nursing is cool, I get to help people every day, work with my hands instead of riding a desk, and 12 hour shifts mean I only work three days a week which is sweeeeeet. Plus I'm in the exact place I want to be (coronary care) - I love cardiology, I knew I wanted to work in this area since I was a student. Doesn't hurt that my coworkers are amazing hilarious people and so I actually enjoy going to work.

In school news: assignments! GAAHHHHHHHHhhhhhhnoooooooooo. Three thousand words due in 9 days and I havent started yet. Determinants of health and the Ottawa Charter.

Pfft shows what you know. IT WAS MARIO GALAXY SUCKA. Got the final star today, booyah. Who the hell wants to play as Luigi though?

Back on school business, I'm trying to decide which determinant of health to write about. I'm thinking of writing about access to health care, and I could talk about universal health coverage, but oh my god the can of worms that would open. Maybe I'll stick with something like transport or housing.

I'm following Spanish classes and really like it, except for those moments when I have to pack my bag and actually leave the house to attend classes. I hate leaving the house.

I'm also studying to become a web developer and follow JavaScript classes. I'm not particularly excited about the course, but it seems useful.

I believe I would be taken on as a medical officer (which is commissioned officer?). Yes, they pay for all or part of med school, and the years I study there would count towards my years of service. I'm looking forward to the traveling and new experiences - I also hate desk jobs. But three days of work a week does sound nice...

And it's great that you enjoy your coworkers! I used to volunteer in a nursing unit at my local hospital, and those nurses hated each other. (Well, they were friendly face-to-face, but would talk about each other behind backs.) I switched departments to endoscopy, and found the nurses there to be like a family. It's much more enjoyable, and I've stayed with them. Makes all the difference.

For your essay, wouldn't a controversial topic like healthcare be easier to write 3000 words on? At least you won't run out of things to say. (:

For Spanish especially, take advantage of the classes in-person! It's a great language, but man do they speak fast sometimes. Get that listening/speaking practice in while you can.

1) Minecraft is to homework what bleach is to germs. I'm just saying. Not that I have any direct experience with working on a project (at work) 15 minutes before it's due because I played Minecraft all afternoon the day before. Nuh-uh.

2) Three weeks from today I will be a bona fide graduate with a bachelor's degree in Rural Studies - Writing & Communication. And I did it before I turned 50, ya'll!!!

3) Bandita - how about socio-economic status? Or is that one facet of access to health care?  For my senior project I'm taking the health care journey my family is going through from a non-metro (almost but not quite rural - accessing care 3 hours away because *specialists* and also *clinical trials*), and am under the impression that urban vs rural (rural focus because the program is titled Rural Studies, you know) is not as big a factor in who recieves care or when or why, as socio-economic status is. I think that's called a thread derail, actually.

Hey ya'll ! Studying sucks!
