Tad Williams' Message Board

Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies -- 'God damn it, you've got to be kind.'
-    Kurt Vonnegut, 1922-2007

Welcome to the message board for tadwilliams.com. All comments are welcome, whether kudos or brickbats. However, please bear in mind that Tad would like this to be a friendly, civil message board, at least in the relations between users. We reserve the right to remove postings, or even ban postings, from anyone who crosses the boundary of reasonable taste. Basically, you can argue vigorously with someone, but watch your language, okay? We have a lot of young readers as well as grown-ups, so please show them some respect.

But the main requirement here is: have fun.

Re: QM - The 80's

I just noticed I have 444 already-read mails in my inbox. And in another folder, 111. I like numbers like that.

Pah. The bed will be fine without you.

I, on the other hand, will not.

Mostly because I finished Under Heaven yesterday and I surely have nothing to read that would be sufficiently distracting from my sadness in finishing that story....

The bed will surely be fine without me.... but it's more the me without bed that is worrying me.... Hehehe...

But work is not really motivational in my going to bed on time.... as I don't really feel like getting up early to go to it....

Finishing a good book is always ... horrible. That doesn't sound right, using "horrible" to describe a good book...

I always feel so disorientated when I have to come back to the "real" world... want to go back to the story-worlds. See what else is happening there...

The odd thing is that I entirely understand that feeling, even though when you look at it rationally, it makes no sense at all.

Hahahha... I once did a marathon read of the Hobbit and LOTR and finished all books in about five days... I was seriously not suited for the "normal" world during and after that... Kept wondering where I was and how that would relate to the "real" world of Middle-Earth.....

*giggles at Libra*

I should probably re-read those, too. But for now, I'm buried in fairy-tales (NaNo research) - which reminds me, must go to the library, see if they've got any more books.
Also, I must get my fluttering printer to work, I need a map of fairyland.

Yes! I know... although in another way it makes perfect sense again....
And on top of it all, I am really a night person.... My story-part of the brain does not come up to speed until about ten or ten-thirty in the evening....

Blinking sleepily at people at work might not be the best option at this moment.... I'm supposed to be creating the budget for 2011.... Now, if that suddenly relates to the amount of elves needed for a well-functioning ring-bearing party, I think someone would notice it....

Oh I really need you to push me through NaNo this year.... I need to just the once at least produce something... even if it's the worst writing I've ever done..... I gotta get my writing mode to function again so I can finally re-write and finish my series....

Re: QM - The 80's

Dammit, you're making me wake up the rest of the family with my laughter!

I know what you're saying about your writing brain - mine is awake enough at work, creating all sorts of thoughts, which lead to a stream of chaotic notes during lunch break (yesterday I even wrote while walking to the train), but when I come home, it shuts down from tiredness, and only comes back on at bedtime.

I've finally convinced Manu to join, too. I think the actual reasoning was something like, "your Smarch-friends really are fun - if the NaNo meets are also as funny as you claim, I may have to join..."

Sorry.... but my brain is on now.... it's even worse at work right now, because nobody understand the silly remarks that I make and they look at me funnily, which means I have to laugh even harder....I really do need a smarch-sanctuary where I can just be me.... Or maybe I can convince the timegods to repeat the nice sunny Castlefest day until eternity.... But with my luck, they would prolly just get it wrong and repeat my first day at work after the holidays....

Good for her! Always nice to get a new thing to do (well if you at least try to do it)

Re: QM - The 80's

Manu and I decided, on the way home, that Castlefest should just last all summer. With different bands and sellers every week or so, staying as long as they want...

Re: QM - The 80's

Also, I'm so glad I'm mostly working on my own now, so I don't get odd looks for sudden exclamations like "Oh, a hundred fluttering flamingos, I forgot Easter!", and I can mutter dialogues to myself, imaginary-language accent included.
Talking to myself seems to be the only way I can focus. Otherwise, I have thoughts about three or four different stories tumbling around my brain, climbing over each other, bouncing up and down and screaming, "me! Me! Me! Think about me!" - "No, look at me, I'm all new and shiny and funny!"

Re: QM - The 80's

I get the crazy looks a lot, as I am another speaker-to-self and hummer-to-self.... But I even do that in the grocery shop.... I mean, it focusses my attention to the thing I should be focussing on. If I weren;t doing that, you would suddenly see me drop on on my butt in the middle of the grocery store while grabbing a book, piece of writing material or flute.... or you'd see me wandering through the shop without any idea of where I was or what I was supposed to be doing, completely lost in thought...

For the same reason I make up stories while I'm in bed waiting for sleep.... If I leave my brain un-controlled, I would never sleep one bit.... I got to focus my brain on one thing... For example the idea of Castlefest having a portal to a different universe and how I and my friends get sucked through it any become warriors and druids.... or that I meet up with that person who plays irish music and we hit it off and start a band and I get to quit my job because the band is so popular.... or whatever suits my fancy at the time of bed-going... Usually completely impossible things.... but hey, that's what dreams are for, right!

Sounds eerily like my idea for NaNo...

Hm, I really need to get some names for Mrs Seven Bodies. And costumes for her. And names for my characters. I have dozens to name, and only one name yet, "der Edle Edelbert von Ertlbertl" *mad cackling* Not his real name, but his friends need similarly crazy ones.

Great minds huh?!

But I'll leave you to deal with the name-giving... I'll not be too much help in the germanic name department.... I still have to run to my German colleague to get translations to simple words like "per accident" and such....

Talking about laguage chaos.... this is my private tickle of the day for the Dutch, German and English language:

Wie (/%we%/) = who in Dutch, = how in German
Hoe (/%who%/)= is how in Dutch
Who = who in English

I love that..... have a whole lot of other ones.... but I just love confusing others with these little tickles of language-outrageousness....
