Tad Williams' Message Board

Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies -- 'God damn it, you've got to be kind.'
-    Kurt Vonnegut, 1922-2007

Welcome to the message board for tadwilliams.com. All comments are welcome, whether kudos or brickbats. However, please bear in mind that Tad would like this to be a friendly, civil message board, at least in the relations between users. We reserve the right to remove postings, or even ban postings, from anyone who crosses the boundary of reasonable taste. Basically, you can argue vigorously with someone, but watch your language, okay? We have a lot of young readers as well as grown-ups, so please show them some respect.

But the main requirement here is: have fun.

Re: (Human) spambots are back :(

I don't mind spammers nearly as much if they don't take away precious Smarchmoot-minutes. And interrupt the music.

Also, I fully expect regular reminders about the rose now.

Re: (Human) spambots are back :(

Sander, I was recently looking into Mollom: http://mollom.com/.

I haven't tried the service, but I learned about them through Todd Hoff at highscalability.com, who used them on a project.  http://highscalability.com/blog/2011/2/ … 0-re.html.

Maybe worth a try if you're having a tough time with automated approaches to combating spam.

Rock7299 is spamming: http://www.tadwilliams.com:9080/bbs/vie … p?id=10694

I am amazed that some people will take the time to register at a site just to spam randomly like this.

Re: (Human) spambots are back :(

Wow, two in a week. :/ Taken care of now.

Matt: thanks for the suggestion, but the total level of spam here isn't that bad yet; other than just now, I don't think we've had more than one spammer per month actually posting, and it's all human-originated, which means that anything mollom would be unsure about would sail right through.
Mostly we're 'suffering' from profile link spam registrations for the benefit of google (~10 per week), but I'm deleting those links almost as fast as they're put in, and registrations for that purpose are slowly but steadily declining. I still have a couple of tricks up my sleeve which just take time to implement (as would putting in something like mollom), and the volume has remained low enough that finding that time hasn't become a priority yet. (2 minutes per day is easier to justify than one solid block of 2 hours, even if it'd pay itself back swiftly enough.) :)

Sad, sad, sad.

Either I'm getting older, or they're getting cleverer. <<-- That is not a question that requires a response.

Or are their singular posts quick cut and paste jobs? This is a question that does not require, but could tolerate a response.

Re: (Human) spambots are back :(

We're now apparently an attractive enogh target that spammers are recreating ancient existing threads just to try and blend in, limiting their spam to just their signature. I'd be grateful if people could keep an eye out for such threads by newly registered members and report them (you can see if something is an existing thread by running a google search for a sentence from the post to see if it matches anything else).

Was in e-books, which is a new forum. The mantidinae must not have been set as moderator for that specific forum (punbb doesn't have the concept of "global" moderators, alas). I'll add you all to the new forums now.
