(Human) spambots are back :(
So apparently the spammers have decided that this message board has enough pagerank for it to be worth for them to pay humans in poorer countries (the Philippines so far) to manually register here and post spam. You can recognize them by their behaviour of digging up an old thread and posting a very short reply there (1-4 sentences) which makes sense (e.g. they're actually coherent sentences), but doesn't have anything to do with the original topic or the discussion which followed it - only with a couple of the keywords they're spamming. And then they have a 'signature' (typed manually) which contains the URL which they're spamming, neatly keyword stuffed.
Please report such behaviour if you see it (using the report link), so that it'll stand out more for one of the Mantidinae or Hierarchs to clean it up. Also, the active topics might not always update right after deleting a batch of spam, which means you'll see topics in there which don't actually have any valid new replies anymore, and if you click on the link to the last post, you'll get a "bad request" message. Sorry for that.
Also, there's nothing much we can do at this point to stop this kind of spam. If it gets too bad, we can see about adding an extra question to the registration step which Tad fans would know, but Philippinese spammers wouldn't (e.g. "How many Otherland books are there?"), approving registrations manually (though I really don't want that extra work, and I suspect SS would concur), or possibly banning all of the Philippines from registration (really don't want to do that!). But for the moment I'm hoping that by being diligent and removing all incoming spam relatively swiftly, we'll become unattractive as a spam target (that might actually work since there's actual costs for the spammers due to the necessary human involvement, even if those costs are really low).

Has this died down by now, or is it still something to be on the watch for?

Re: (Human) spambots are back :(
It's very limited still. Three yesterday, two a couple of days before that, another one a week before that. It'll probably continue at that rate for a couple of weeks, so yes, keep an eye out for it. (I'm also blocking their ip addresses, so that might help stop things. Since it's humans operating here, I don't think they have a botnet with an infinite number of ip addresses.)

Re: (Human) spambots are back :(
Registration from these spambots has taken a huge step up during the last couple of months. Most don't bother posting anymore, as they seem to have learned that that results in swift deletion, but instead they just have their spam links in their profile. For the good of the internet, I think some harsher action needs to be taken against them.

No!!! My Filipino brethren, why would you do this? (And yeah, it's Filipino, not Philippinese --- trust me, I got slapped down online for daring to use "Philipino" with a "Ph". Apparently it's no longer in usage.) First you take up the mantle of telemarketing, and then this? Have you no honor? Have you no shame? How would the great Jose Rizal see you if he were alive today? For shame... for SHAME.

Re: (Human) spambots are back :(
And gone.
There's actually about half a dozen underpaid human spammers a day registering at the moment. I've banned a few ip ranges from the Philippines, so now they're mostly coming from India. Most seem to have learned that posting is the swiftest way to get neutered, so they only register and hope for googlebot to visit their profile pages before I delete their links and ban the accounts. We'll see who tires of this first. For the sake of potential Tad fans from India, I hope it's them.

And dealt with as you posted that. :) I've begun blocking small netblocks with the heaviest spam activity from parts of India as well at this point.

Thanks. Judging by the number of banned users, you stay busy. Are the other heirarchites and mantii also blocking spambots?

As far as I know, I can't ban spammers.

Re: (Human) spambots are back :(
Almost certainly a spammer. But until he tries to link to somewhere, we'll pretend he's a real fan. Being from the Philippines isn't a crime yet. ;)
edit: urgh, but he included a "hidden" link in his post, and I didn't notice until sisterdew reported it (thanks for that!). That trick won't work a second time, though - I just wrote myself some custom user CSS to make any "hidden" link stand out much more clearly.

We appreciate your quick action on these accounts.
Isn't there a way to add a captcha to the registration page? It wouldn't prevent these human spam bots, but it should keep their borg bretheren from taking over the site.

There is a captcha on the registration page. A simple one, admittedly, but the message board wouldn't have launched without one. We also do email address verification. But apparently the increase in pagerank from spam like this on untended message boards is profitable enough (when employed by scrupleless 'SEO' companies) for it to be worth paying humans from India and the Philippines to do nothing but register on message boards all day long. :(
I've been considering adding a pool of Tad-related questions to the registration page (e.g. "Tad Williams is a famous: 1) wrestler, 2) basketball player, 3) science fiction author, 4) romance author"), but suspect it wouldn't be enough of a barrier to be worth my time.

Sorry, that is incorrect. You'll have to hand in your membership of the forum now. The only correct answer is "1) wrestler". (His WWE name is "Fluffy Warm"; ref: Stone Cold. (I think this was inspired by the famous log picture, back in the Forum 9 days...)) >:D
(Good thing Tad hardly ever visits these forums anymore, otherwise I suspect I could hand in my Hierarchy title right about now... *g*)
