Tad Williams' Message Board

Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies -- 'God damn it, you've got to be kind.'
-    Kurt Vonnegut, 1922-2007

Welcome to the message board for tadwilliams.com. All comments are welcome, whether kudos or brickbats. However, please bear in mind that Tad would like this to be a friendly, civil message board, at least in the relations between users. We reserve the right to remove postings, or even ban postings, from anyone who crosses the boundary of reasonable taste. Basically, you can argue vigorously with someone, but watch your language, okay? We have a lot of young readers as well as grown-ups, so please show them some respect.

But the main requirement here is: have fun.

Re: Quiller's Mint -- The Unstocked Larder

My dream is to learn to play flute well enough to play in one of those big symphony orchestras.  That would be so great.  Either that, or learn to play flute and probably several other instruments, well enough to play music for big theatre musicals.  That would be really fun, too.

Ooh, Marian, I like this idea.

Fantasy?

To travel 6 months out of every year.  To be able to afford first class, but not be so attached to first class that I'd use it.  To bring my friends and my dogs along with me.  And to be able to read, undisturbed, for an hour a day.

Re: Quiller's Mint -- The Unstocked Larder

I think I'd also like to publish a book. It's not my biggest goal anymore, but I still think it'd be really cool.

And not just something silly, either, like Ten Ways to Boil a Halibut, but a really good work.

Re: Quiller's Mint -- The Unstocked Larder

For a long time my dream's been to live in San Francisco. Someday I'd like to have a little apartment there...I've visited there a few times and fell in love with it: city, ocean, forests, mountains nearby...beautiful hazy fog...

And damn fine sushi. You just can't get good sushi in the midwest...

Money is not really a big motivator for me, but I would like to have the freedom to be able to travel wherever and whenever I feel like it.

Re: Quiller's Mint -- The Unstocked Larder

A year or so ago,  when I first heard Barenaked Ladies' "If I had a Million Dollars," I decided the first thing I'd do if I did, in fact, have a million dollars, would be to build a great big playland in the middle of the country, and pay for all of my friends from everywhere to come play with me for an indefinite amount of time.

I'd still like to do that.

Even if I weren't rich, I'd love to be able to just jump on a plane and visit my friends far away. I'm finally meeting a woman I've known for several years, and because I'm doing just that. She invited me for a visit, and I'm going. I can't really afford it, but what the heck? Life is too short.

Re: Quiller's Mint -- The Unstocked Larder

Red, I've never wanted to live there.  When I was a small child, my mother took me to visit my Great Aunt Rose (a wonderful woman, world traveler, sweet as could be).  She lived on California Street, in an old high-rise with one of those iron-accordion things that pulled across the front of the elevator instead of a door.

When we got to her apartment on the ninth floor and I saw the view, I was totally freaked by how many buildings I could see.  There were so many people!

I live in a small (5,000 people) town on flat land.  I love to visit The City, but I don't think I've ever gotten over that first impression when I was 5 years old.

Re: Quiller's Mint -- The Unstocked Larder

I like the City...I'd like to be able to get lost in the crowd, surrounded by people...and then take a short drive out of the city, into Muir Woods and be surrounded by solitude.

*prods Miiru: Go on! Might as well share, you know...*

Re: Quiller's Mint -- The Unstocked Larder

Yay Libbette! 1200! Woo!

"You've got the hooch,  baby. You've got the sweetest thing in the world!"

Okay,  not sure that's quite appropriate for the occasion, but it's spirited enough, yes?

Congrats!

I think Miiru has retired to the treehouse... shall we join her?

I just remembered, there's a new member called Treehouse!  This could get confusing...

I'll stay for my 800th...and I'll stay for the Inevitable Demise of the Larder...

But then I must to bed. Wouldn't want to be too tired to enjoy my Saturday tomorrow...
