Tad Williams' Message Board

Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies -- 'God damn it, you've got to be kind.'

QM - The pink stables

On a cold, yet sunny day, you chance upon a pink building. And I mean _really_ pink. It looks as though they are stables. But for some reason there are no horses around. But that isn't the weirdest thing about the building. The weirdest part is the bar that is located on the outside of the building. You walk up to the barman and ask him why his bar is outside. Patiently he explains that this is to ensure that the rules are followed. "What rules?" you ask him, confused. "The rule that whenever you are warm, you must go back out into the cold. And whenever you are cold, you must go inside where it is warm. Because most people won't leave the warmth of the building voluntarily, they have put the bar outside. So if you want a drink, you'll have to come back out into the cold."
Shaking your head you order a drink and head inside. Just beyond the door, you stop, shocked. Everywhere you look you can see pink lace.

"Welcome to the Quiller's Mint. It was once called Queen's Lament, though not many people know that. I think you can guess why it was called that, can't you."

*wonders where the pink colour comes from* Neither almonds nor cacao are pink...

In my room? Oh, it is moist. Far too moist. My windows are completely wet in the mornings, and some spots on the walls got mouldy (I've got rid of that, though).

How lovely! Pink stables!

Do they sell horse-shaped cookies at the bar?

They must color the Creme de noyaux. It is red.

Or perhaps Chambord, it's a raspberry liqueur.

You know, as much as I say I don't want to work here anymore, they've started shifting my boss's cases to other attorneys, and I feel sad.

I'm bored... and once again, too lazy for useful stuff.  I blame the moot. Now studying and writing aren't fun enough any more.
I did do a bit of Latin, though. Revising vocabulary and grammar.

I felt that way after Calgary - was entirely uninterested in doing any actual work at work for weeks.

Re: QM - The pink stables

Yeah, I remembered how everyone was writing about missing each other - I totally felt that way this week. Standing around at work, muttering, "I don't like you any more, you're boring" at people...

Re: QM - The pink stables

Under the heading of "It's a Small World," I found out that one of the other secretaries and I worked at the same law firm in Beverly Hills 22 years ago, at the same time! We didn't know each other (it was a large firm), but ....

How weird is that?

Someday will find you.

Re: QM - The pink stables

I've just been outside to warm up my feet - by running barefooted in the snow, of course. I know that sounds odd, but it does improve the circulation in my feet so nicely. 150 m are now no longer a big thing, even in snow that comes halfway up my shins (it's snowed quite a lot today, enough that my feet no longer touch the scratchy frozen snow underneath). Very pleasant.

Magpie, have I told you recently that you're odd?

Em, how long until you finish your degree?  Maybe it's worthwhile to stay in your current job until you a) get a severance package, or b) can look for a whole new career.

20 more weeks -- I've been thinking about that -- working in a different field.

However, they fired a 16 year employee a few weeks ago, for cause (it was trumped up). They can easily find a reason to fire me; I do not think I'll be around for 20 weeks.

There's so many items on each side of the "pro" and "con" list. I cannot make up my mind!

EDITED TO ADD: South Carolina is an "at will" employment state.

Oh, I'm sure they did. I tend not to notice it.

But honestly, this is the first time since primary school that running feels like fun!

I'm inclined to say stick with this job until you get layed off/fired or finish your degree.  In a lay-off or fire situation, you'd still be eligible for unemployment benefits, right?  I just think it'd be kinda odd to get another legal secretary job, then look for another job in a whole other field a few months later.

I'm sure Sahi would tell you that I'm a complete wuss when it comes to snow. ;-)  (if she hasn't told you that already)

No, I don't think that topic came up.

But as far as I'm concerned, everyone else is a spoiled indoor person anyway, so it makes no difference. :D

That's what Husband thinks, too. So, that's two in the "stay" column and none in the "go" column.

I had the l-a-r-r-r-r-r-g-e 'rita at dinner. The glass was so large there should have been goldfish swimming 'round in it!
