Tad Williams' Message Board

Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies -- 'God damn it, you've got to be kind.'

Question about War of the Flowers [spoilers]

I've just finished reading, and really loved the book, as I have with all of Tad Williams works, but was left wondering about the fairies reluctance to use, or even have wings. Perhaps I missed the explanation due to tiredness (as I read this pretty much without putting it down). Was this ever explained?

Good question, it makes me want to reread the book! (Since I have no clue, and didn't even remember the issue.)

Welcome aboard, by the way!

I can't remember exactly either, but I think wings were considered "common"... The upper-class fairies are all rather human-like, IIRC, and so the others want to imitate them.

Yeah something like that, I think. The fairies want to appear more human since they sort of follow what they do so they want to look like them, which is hard to do if you have wings.

Re: Question about War of the Flowers [spoilers]

A lot of the lowliest races in the eyes of the ruling fairies didn't have wings either though, like the goblins.

And most of the fairies despised humans so is doesn't seem like wishing to look exactly like them would be enough of a reason for them to surgically remove their wings, or refuse to use them to fly if they did have them.

It just seemed like a big part of fairy society and was mentioned all through the book, so I kinda thought there would be a clearer answer.

Sometimes tradition doesn't have a clear answer... (And Tad would be evil enough to reflect that in his books.)

Re: Question about War of the Flowers [spoilers]

Surgically removing them and not using your ability if you do have them is a pretty big thing to do for a reasonless tradition though. Also, if it was just tradition why would lower class fairies still use them to fly?
